Born in Montgomery, Janet Nolan earned a BA in Art from Auburn University and an MFA at Georgia State. She moved to New York City in 1976 and spent her career using the everyday, mundane items tossed on the streets of NYC to make world-renowned installation art. Her design object of choice was discarded umbrellas. She had numerous solo exhibits and has permanent exhibits at Harvard University, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts at Auburn University, and Troy University.
Nolan’s most poignant works are reliquaries made from items left by first responders in the aftermath of 9/11. Her work was covered in art journals, as well as the New York Times, Newsday, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Nolan stated that the goal of her work was to elevate items from "…depleted debris to vibrant art", and she succeeded in her mission.
